Proof that You're a Writer...

Used with permission from Debbie Ridpath Ohi at Inkygirl.com.
  • You edit everything, including your husband. While he's speaking to you.
  • Your main purpose for leaving the house is to scribble down conversations that other people are having so that you can go back home and type them into your novel.
  • You accidentally call your children by the names of characters in the book you are writing. And they answer.
  • You know more names of editors and agents in New York than you do of the people living on your street.
  • You go into withdrawal if you spend more than a few hours away from your computer.
  • A day without checking your email makes you so ill you end up in the ER, where fortunately, they have free wireless access.
  • You have better conversations with the voices in your head than the people sitting next to you.
  • You prefer to sit in a quiet room with your computer than to go out on a Saturday night.
  • You can come up with five other words for "look" without even thinking.
  • The word 'rejection' makes your heart stop, even when it has nothing to do with your writing.

Do you have any more to add? Leave them in the comments :)

I won't be posting on Monday because the kids are off from school so we're going to Knott's Berry Farm (which actually has far more roller coasters than berries these days). Have a great weekend and I'll see you back here on Wednesday!

A trip to Walmart includes trolling for pieces of dialogue.

I can come up with five other words for "said" too. LOL!
Great list. I must be a writer. :)

I don't know if I'd be as social as I am without my husband making all these plans for us on the weekend. A night at home reading or writing or just watching a movie is my choice. But I'm always glad during and after that I spent time with friends.

What a fantastic list. Here's another one.

You rewrite the note from Santa Claus to your kids three times, once for typo's, once for content, once for believabiltiy.

Have fun on the coasters!

Firstly, enjoy your time off. My kids are off, today.

This list is so true. I'd never thought about how many agents names I know. Yeah...I do know more of their names than people who live on my street. Oops....

You will write on any scrap of paper that available.

"You have better conversations with the voices in your head than the people sitting next to you."
Hate to admit how true this one is for me...

Have fun with your kids!

I love to eavesdrop and I study people's expressions ALL the time. I hadn't realized why I was doing that until recently. It tells me how to show what a character is feeling.

As I look back, I guess I was a born writer. When the adults would be gossiping and when I came into the room, someone would say, "Little pictures have big ears."

It took over four decades and years of writing to figure out 1. they were talking about me. 2. I was meant to write for my greatest enjoyment as a child was eavesdropping on adult conversation.

Fun topic, Sherrie. Have a family fun time.

Did you see that little scene in Family Guy where Peter narrates his life? It's hilarious...and sometimes my brain works that way:

Oh man, so many truths here!

I can add: "You're known for spacing out."

This one all the time.

I talk about my characters so much people listening in might think I was referring to relatives or a family friend. (Hugs)Indigo

You have a pad of paper in your purse, by your bed, in your car, and in the kitchen.

Too funny. I really do prefer a quiet Saturday night and why do those friends visit me on a rainy Sunday?

Jan Markley said...

All points are very true and very funny.

Here's another one: you correct the grammar of random strangers and cashiers and notice grammatical errors on the box of tea.

Have fun at the farm!

Oh this made me laugh. I actually edited my Dad when I was on the phone to him yesterday :)

I think another one is: you see stories everywhere... in a forgotten alleyway, an unusual old building, a creepy twisted tree...

Ack! I LOVE THIS!!! Thanks for the smile. Because they're all sad but true!!

Awesome post! I'd much rather stay home with my computer than go out on a Saturday night. LOL, that's what I'm doing right now.

Hee! Hee! Great list!

Have a super fun time at Knott's Berry Farm! I haven't been there in YEARS! I wish I could take my kids too!

Cool list, Sherrie! And yep, I can definitely identify with many of these: editing people, including husband & children while they're talking, reading/writing rather than going out, and yeah, sad to say, but I do know names of more editors/agents than people on my street . . . wow, guess I must be a writer! :)

Great list! So many wonderful comments too.

There are people on my street?

You follow the #amwriting hashtag to the point that you forget that not everyone on Twitter is a writer.

You narrate opening a piece of candy and think about how that sugar would affect your main character's gift.

Have fun with the kiddies today.

I hope you guys had a great time!

Brilliant list. I followed along nodding and laughing the whole way through.

I had a dream the other night about two of my characters going to Prom together. There's no prom nor mention of prom in my book.

Great post, Sherrie!

Fun list!!

And the reverse of the "rejection" thing did happen to me. I was technical director/resource manager at my day job and I told all the project managers to put "REQUEST" at the front of their e-mails when asking for resources. Unfortunately I was also on submission at the time. Every time a "REQUEST" came in through my Blackberry, my heart would stop. LOL

Your characters actually come to life and move into your house.

Oh, these are so true and so funny! I'll add "if you teach your children to prepare their own meals." Yep, I did that. :D
