My son asked me to make quiche last week.
Not something you expect to hear from a 10-year-old, especially one who tends to only eat food he's sure he likes. But when he showed me the recipe he wanted me to make, I had to laugh. Because it was in here.
Yeah. Who knew a graphic novel could make my kids try something new?
I've written about the Bone Series before. Author Jeff Smith started off publishing them himself. Word of mouth and the internet made these books wildly popular. They appeal to reluctant readers, and girls read them just as much as boys.
But did you know that they're #3 on ALA's list of Top 10 Banned Graphic Novels? Figures. What would you expect from a book that encourages kids to eat quiche?
Just for the record, the recipe is DELICIOUS! Thanks, Jeff :D

Love it! See -reading inspires cooking for kids. ;) I'm going to have to check out that book too now.
Bone is on the banned list. Seriously WOW!
Hey, if it encourages kids to read AND try new foods, that's a good thing!
Haha, awesome! But who bans quiche? Geez.
My son loves the Bone books. I can't believe they are banned. But I'd be surprised by a lot of books that are banned and I just don't know it.
Sounds like a great success story!
Go quiche! Who knew you'd find something like that in Bone. I can't believe it's on the banned book list. Good grief. Some people.
wow! didn't know this was on the banned list! but so funny about the quiche!
What?! Banned??? How weird. But how cool that tit encourage him to eat quiche. I could eat it every day. But I'm still stunned that it was banned! What for??
Very, very cool. I loved reading when I was little, and the things that it introduced me to always seemed wondrous. Quiche! So much fun to make. What an enjoyable post to read--thanks for sharing it!
lol! That is a great story. Gotta love a kid who will eat quiche, ask specifically for it, AND hand you the recipe he wants.
I've really got to get those books for my daughter!
Happy Monday, Sherrie!
I keep meaning to get these for my son - and then forget. I am off to AMAZON right now!!
What a great example of how books open up new experiences for kids. :D
I didn't know it was on a banned list. wow.
My husband loves quiche. Only he makes the crustless kind, and by the time he's finished making it, I would hardly call it a quiche. ;)
hi miss sherri! i didnt ever hear of that bone book. maybe its something i could like to read. im gonna ask my brothers to look at it and maybe i could get it. my brother sebi does most of the cooking and he did quiche one time and it was pretty good.
...hugs from lenny
It's on the banned list! No way! I never knew that. It just makes me laugh. I'm glad the quiche was good (I love quiche). =)
Quiche! I wouldn't have expected that from a graphic novel either :-) But I love how reading introduces us to new ideas, never get tired of that!
You would only need to ban quiche when the base goes soggy ;)
Why else would the book bring on the banners rather than bring them out.
Real men don't care that some think they shouldn't eat quiche. Your son is going far.
Three cheer for Bone! A literary life enriches us unexpected ways.
