Mastering His Stuff

I help out in the Homework Club after school three days a week.

Yes, the euphemism makes me laugh, too.
Join our club! It rocks!
Trust me, I didn't name it.

A few days ago, one of the 2nd graders raised his hand to ask a question. I headed over to his table to help him. He was sitting next to a couple of older boys from my daughter's class.

As I got there, one of the older boys leaned over to the 2nd grader and said, "If you need help, you can ask us. We're in 4th grade. We've mastered all that 2nd grade stuff."

I bit my tongue to keep from laughing. I wasn't needed here. That boy was in good hands. The hands of a master.

Instead, I ran for a piece of paper. So I could write down what the 4th grader said.

Of course.  :)

ROFL. That's too cute.

And I don't blame you for running to get some paper to write that down. It's was priceless.

Love it. You know you're a writer when you just have to steal something that good. :)

Ha! I forget how much even a year means in grade school.
You sure have a fertile ground to harvest, Ms. Author. I'd keep the paper and pen right in my pocket.;)

LOL, that's exactly what I would have said. ;)

Happy Thanksgiving, Sherrie!

This is why I LOVED the multiage class I taught for nine years. I had a combination 4th and 5th grade class. The kids stayed with me for 2 years. In their first year, the older kids mentored the younger ones. In the second year, the younger kids became the older ones and mentored a new batch. Instead of just one teacher in the room, half the kids were teachers, too.

Sadly, the program was squashed by the demands of standardized testing by grade level and a turnover in administration who believed in rigidity and uniformity. :(

Awesome! He's so confident! Thanks for sharing this.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Awesome! I love how the big kids take care of the little ones. Ours have a "buddy" class that's 3 grades younger than you. It's big stuff when you graduate from being a Little Buddy to being a Big Buddy. :)

Christina: I love it too :)

Christy: It's actually amazing to see the difference between 2nd grade and 4th grade. Astonishing how much they grow and learn in two years!

Dianne: It's too bad that program got squashed. I think it helps solidify their own learning when older kids help younger ones. Plus it's just good to learn to help others.

Krispy: The confidence they gain from helping each other is priceless.

Susan: We also have reading buddies where the older kids read with the younger classes. I think it helps the older kids as much as it does the younger ones and the little guys really look up to the older kids :)

Lisa: It was a great moment :)

Lenny: I know -- a club for homework. Crazy, right? ;P But it's cool when the older kids can help out the younger ones.

Angela: Children are always an inspiration to me :)
