The Office

My son set up an office for himself last year. He emptied the shelves and restocked them with his favorite books. My husband found an old OFFICE sign which we lovingly stuck on the door. Drew spends hours in there with the door shut, reading and rereading, sometimes even writing and doing homework.

Unfortunately, his choice of office space conflicts with my daughter's bladder. And bathing.

Why he enjoys reading and writing in the bathroom is beyond my comprehension. But whenever he disappears for 30 minutes, an hour, or more, the first place we look is Drew's office. My husband joked that for Christmas we should have bought him a padded toilet seat.

I've always preferred window seats, sofas, beds and armchairs for curling up with a good book. But that's just me. Drew says he likes the bathroom because he can shut the door and no one disturbs him. Personally, that's never worked for me. My children have no qualms about following me into the bathroom and asking for a snack, like I've got a stocked mini fridge by the toilet!

I'm glad he enjoys reading so much. I just wonder have to wonder, why there? Anybody else like reading in the bathroom?

That's hilarious! I try to spend as little time in the bathroom as possible, but even at 7, my son will go in for an hour to read :)

Ugh. No, I don't like reading in the bathroom.

However, I do spend more time than I should in the shower thinking about characters and plot lines and the beginning of my next chapter. It's the only place I get to be alone these days.

Unless the two year old hops in fully clothed. Now that she's figured out how to open doors, that's a problem.

I really need to get childproof door handles.

My boy is 3 years old, and has to take at leat 5 book swith him to the bathroom. He'll sit in there for at least half an hour and flip the pages, reading the stories that he has memorized from us reading to him so much.

PJ -- Good to know it's not just my son!

Glam -- If you find childproof door handles, I want to know where -- I need them too!

Kelly -- Maybe it is a guy thing. I had an uncle who was the same way, only with crossword puzzles!

Rob -- I loved when my kids would "read" books they'd memorized. Looks like there are a few of us with bathroom readers :)

That's adorable. I love that you put up the office sign. I guess it goes to show you that you need to act wherever inspiration strikes!

Oh, how funny! I love the office sign on the door! Embarrassed to admit it, but we have a hand held electronic poker game in ours. Was that a full house or a flush? ;)

Yep. Me, books, and the "office". I wish they'd had those comfy seats when I was a kid.

It was the quietest, smallest room in the house - less distractions.

Suzanne -- The office sign cracks people up whenever they come over. Drew's pretty proud of it :)

Rena -- Poker, huh? That's one I haven't heard before!

Sarah -- I hadn't thought of it, but you're right - not a lot of distraction in that little room :)
